Spencer Tech Brings Chicago City of Learning Into Chicago Public Schools
Chicago City of Learning (CCOL) offers several drop-in sites across the city where young people can explore the CCOL website, do the various online activities, and earn digital badges. However, until recently, none of those sites were in traditional schools.
That is, until Spencer Elementary Technology Academy, a public school in the Austin neighborhood on Chicago’s Westside, invited CCOL to house a program there. Spencer’s drop-in site was a turning point in linking the primarily out-of-school learning opportunities of City of Learning with Chicago classrooms.
Dr. Shawn Jackson, who at the time was principal of Spencer Tech, was a champion of connecting CCOL and his school. He saw CCOL as a way to empower his students to take greater control over their learning. Dr. Jackson has since become Deputy Chief of Teaching and Learning for Chicago Public Schools and is championing CCOL throughout the CPS system.
