ArtLab+ is an after school program put on by the Smithsonian where kids and teens can socialize with friends, explore digital media, and technical tools.
The kids and teens participate in various workshops to develop their own skills and interests in what is called a “teen driven space.”
“The ArtLab+ is a digital drop in studio for teenagers to come and learn technology,” Cody Colthrap, Mentor and Education Technician for ArtLab+ said.
ArtLab+ operates under the HOMAGO pedagogy, meaning hanging out, messing around and geeking out.
The mentors at ArtLab+ encourage teens to explore their own interests, along with creating their own learning trajectories, and show them how to foster their own values.
ArtLab+ calls themselves a “radically” inclusive space where DC teens can learn from each other’s differences in a welcoming and safe environment.
“It’s about the teens making connections while also connecting institutions around DC together,” Colthrap said.
